Former Petronas president Shamsul joins MMC Corp as chairman

KUALA LUMPUR: Petroliam Nasional Bhd’s (Petronas) former president and CEO Tan Sri Shamsul Azhar Abbas is joining MMC Corp as chairman effective July 16.

The infrastructure and power company told Bursa Malaysia on Monday that the 63-year-old would replace retiring chairman Tan Sri Syed Abdul Jabbar Syed Hassan.

Shamsul will also become chairman of MMC Corp’s nomination committee.

MMC Corp also announced the appointment of lawyer Syed Naqiz Shahabuddin Syed Abdul Jabbar and former under secretary of the Finance Ministry’s tax analysis division, Datuk Siti Halimah Ismail, as independent and non-executive directors.

Shamsul also recently emerged as independent and non-executive director of Enra Group Bhd (formerly Perduren (M) Bhd), effective June 15. The property firm plans to venture into the oil and gas-related business. 

Shamsul joined Petronas in 1975 and was president and CEO of Petronas and chaired Petronas Carigali from Feb 10, 2010 to March 31 this year.

MMC Corp closed unchanged at RM2.50 on Monday.
