What is OTT?

OTT is said to be the sexiest term in the entertainment world today. And that’s because, as one source describes it, OTT lies at the centre of the merger between the worlds of television and digital video.

OTT simply stands for “overthe-top,” the term used for the delivery of film and TV content via the Internet, without requiring users to subscribe to a traditional cable or satellite pay-TV service.

What users still need is an Internet connection, the faster the better of course, and typically, all they need to do is download an App which would then instruct them on how to sign up for the service.

The beauty of OTT versus the traditional forms of consuming content is that viewers get to view what they want and when they want it, provided that the said content is on offer by the OTT platform they are subscribing
to.

Netflix has popularised the OTT concept, which, in turn, is said to be disruptive to traditional players like cable or satellite pay-TV operators.

OTT services allow TV binge-watchers to bypass subscriptions to traditional operators that require viewers to pay for packages that may only contain one or two channels that they really want.

Hence, it is true that OTT services and apps have made it possible for audiences to cut back on some of the TV channels they’re paying for.
