Tanjung Offshore partners Kilgour for aerospace project

Moody's outlook on the Korean banking system has been negative since May 2016.

KUALA LUMPUR: T7 Aero Sdn Bhd, a unit of Tanjung Offshore Bhd, has teamed up with UK-based high value manufacturing company Kilgour Metal Treatments Ltd to explore the building and operation of a metal treatment plant for the aerospace industry in Malaysia.

To this end, T7 Aero today entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Kilgour) to pursue business opportunities in metal treatments in the country.

Under the MoU, Tanjung Offshore and Kilgour will explore the building, operation and setup of a metal treatment plant as part of their diversification into high value manufacturing.

The proposed metal treatment plant would carry out metal surface treatment, chemical processing, NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) activities and coating applications specialising in the aerospace industry.

Kilgour, a subsidiary of Kilgour Aerospace Specialists Ltd, is a manufacturer of complex aerospace components and metal treatment specialist with over 50 years of experience in the UK. The group is confident that it can leverage on Kilgour’s in-depth experience and capabilities in developing new talent which meets the industry requirements.

This partnership aims to provide metal finishing treatment services for both the export and domestic market in Malaysia. This collaboration is also an avenue for Tanjung Offshore to upscale its engineering services into the aerospace industry and for Kilgour to expand its footprint into South-East Asia.

Other areas of collaboration include market development, technology transfer and technology acquisition planning, human capital development programmes, research and development opportunities and other related areas to become an integral part of the Malaysian aerospace industry ecosystem.

Tanjung Offshore chairman Datuk Dr Nik Nozrul Thani Nik Hassan Thani in a statement said: “We’re excited to be venturing into the Malaysian aerospace industry with Kilgour. They bring 50 years of in-depth technical know-how from the global aerospace industry in manufacturing complex components and assemblies. Hence, it’s a strong collaboration for us to set a firm footing into the industry and in working towards the global standards of aerospace requirements.”

Kilgour Aerospace Specialists CEO Ray Kilgour added the company was optimistic about the future of the aerospace industry in Malaysia as the synergistic partnership would provide an avenue for knowledge transfer to the local workforce and allows both parties to accelerate the development of this growing industry in Malaysia.

“For us to develop and invest in this space, where we can bring our expertise it will contribute both to our business growth and the human capital development in Malaysia,’’ he noted.

Tanjung Offshore’s plans to venture into the aerospace industry is part of its long-term strategy to upscale their existing oil and gas engineering business diversifying towards aerospace. The group views aerospace as an entry point into high value industry with great potential, especially with the emergence of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

This is the next phase of manufacturing which concentrates on the end-to-end digitisation of all physical assets and their integration into digital ecosystems with value chain partners.
