KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) unit TNB Repair And Maintenance Sdn Bhd (TNB Remaco) will set up a waste heat recovery power plant (WHRPP) to generate electricity from waste heat from Cement Industries Malaysia Bhd’s (Cima) two cement plants.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the electric utility said TNB Remaco had inked a term sheet agreement with Cima’s wholly-owned subsidiary Negeri Sembilan Cement Industries Sdn Bhd (NSCI) to produce electricity on a build, own, maintain & transfer basis from the plants in Bahau, Negri Sembilan, and Bukit Keteri, Perlis. (Cima is owned by UEM Group Bhd.)
Under the agreement, TNB Remaco, which is TNB's power utility repair and maintenance arm, will construct, operate, maintain and raise financing for the WHRPP.
TNB said the WHRPP would have a combined power generation capability of 23 MW by recovering the exhausted waste heat from the cement plants.
“The project will have an estimated total value of RM200mil with capability in reducing up to 9% – 12% of NSCI’s electricity cost,” TNB said.
The term sheet signing was held on Wednesday on the sidelines of the three-day International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia 2017 (IGEM) that ends Friday.
The agreement was signed by TNB Remaco’s managing director Anuar Yusoff and Cima managing director Mohd Yusri Md Yusof.
“The WHRPP will contribute towards green energy and energy efficiency through reduction of carbon emission as well as competitive advantage through energy cost savings for NSCI cement plants,” TNB said.
“TNB Remaco venturing into the waste heat recovery development will provide new business opportunity in promoting energy efficiency, green-technology and sustainable long-term energy solution.”
