TM’s unifi 30Mbps with data capped for households with incomes below RM4,500


Customers who want to continue enjoying unlimited data after Feb 15, will have to upgrade to the 100Mbps plan.

KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia Bhd is unveiling its new unifi basic broadband with speeds of 30Mbps will be limited exclusively for households with income of RM4,500 and below.

Data usage for unifi basic is capped at 60GB and is priced at RM79.

The plan is made available after communications minister Gobind Singh Deo said internet speeds should be made more affordable for the masses.

The unifi basic plan will be made available exclusively online and from August 15.

Asked why was TM only limiting the 30Mbps plan to only the B40 in the era of data democratisation, its executive vice president of Unifi Imri Mokhtar said: “This is for us to be more targeted, to help the lower income households: the B40. This is in line with the demographics that the government is working on to provide some assistance.”

“But we will be monitoring the response from the market, the customers and what is announced today is not the end of the goodies. I think at TM and Unifi, since our launch in 2005 that we have been progressive new plans to provide more value for Malaysians and it is not just important for Malaysians but for the country as well: in terms of where we stand in the global broadband competitiveness to attract investors,” Imri said.

On whether the new broadband plans was in line with the government’s plan to double broadband speed and reduce pricing by half as directed by communications and multimedia minister Gobind Singh Deo, Imri said: “In terms of supporting the government’s aspirations and initiatives, we have continually been doing so since many years ago and is something that we are always in constant engagement with the government to provide value to our customers.”

On the question of whether broadband prices were still considered highly priced with the unveiling of the new plans, he said: “I believe it provides value and with these plans we do look forward to the next World Bank report and we can expect Malaysia’s global rank positioning to be boosted up by a few notches. The new prices will help us jump up to a much more favourable position in the region.”
