AirAsia refuses to collect extra charge from KLIA2 passengers

AirAsia Group Bhd will cease charging the RM3 fee for all flights departing from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) starting on Monday, in a move to keep air fares low.

KUALA LUMPUR: Low-cost carrier AirAsia is not obligated to collect airport tax for Malaysia Airports (Sepang) Sdn Bhd (MASSB) and it has refused to collect the additional charge from passengers on behalf of MASSB.

In a statement issued on Friday, it said passengers using klia2 should not be charged the same rates as passengers in KLIA.

“klia2 is a low-cost terminal with far lower levels of service provided to passengers, compared to KLIA, which is a full-service terminal,” it said.

“AirAsia has previously lodged a number of official complaints regarding the substandard infrastructure and access at klia2 which has negatively impacted our operational performance and punctuality,” it said.

To date, AirAsia has paid a total of RM663.05mil in airport tax to MASSB.
