Growing from strength to strength

From a team of three to 40 employees today, Suntrack has grown by leaps and bounds.

RECENTLY, Suntrack Development Sdn Bhd’s chief executive officer James Tan proudly walked on stage at the Gala Dinner of the Star Business Outstanding Awards (SOBA) 2019 to collect the Best Employer Platinum Award on behalf of his company.

It was an award that he says, is a reflection of the work that Suntrack had invested in its people. Tan explained that although the Suntrack team was not big in size, but the value that each team member brought to the table was as good as a company 10 times its size.

His formula: By making sure his people are empowered to make decisions; automating tedious processes; rewarding talent, perseverance and dedication; as well as continuous training and development to learn and re-learn job skills and life skills.

“Our workspace is one that encourages individual growth, appreciates achievements and harnesses talents. We want our people to be passionate in what they do, ” Tan said. In fact, passion is a word that is closely tied to Suntrack’s history.

Suntrack’s foray in this sector happened by chance when one of its customers, plagued by financial difficulties and strapped for cash, offered to settle debts with land. Consisting of only three people then, the team developed the said land and successfully sold off their first project in Kajang, in 2002. And that's how Suntrack's remarkable story began.

From a team of three to 40 employees today, Suntrack has grown by leaps and bounds. With such humble beginnings, Tan realised early on that the team needed to have a distinct competitive edge. Passion and dedication became Suntrack’s reputation.

Suntrack's tagline for the last decade of "Building With Passion" epitomised this, but it was fine-tuned last year to "Building With Passion, For All For Life", to reflect the company’s way forward. Suntrack’s vision is to develop MAGIC (Multi-Ability, multi-Generational Inclusive Communities – a term coined by American gerontologist, Dr Bill Thomas) within its developments.

Its aspiration is to build properties that are inclusive and accessible for all, where no one is left behind. To ensure employees felt that they were a part of the Suntrack story moving forward, open discussions and brainstorming sessions were held to establish a clear vision, mission and goals; and to come up with the company’s core values (Quality, Growth, Respect, Integrity and Passion).

Talent recognition is also a big part of Suntrack's story. Guided by a clear three-year road map, Suntrack's Human Resource Department has created a merit-based environment with a comprehensive HR infrastructure to support such a system.

A lot of effort has also been put into establishing a culture of togetherness, with team activities and town halls that promote open, two-way communication.

“It was an honour to receive this award and an encouragement for us to raise the bar even higher in our people management. We hope that this will help attract more talents to join us. But, more importantly, this is a win for our amazing team,” Tan concluded.
