NEW YORK: Asian electric vehicle (EV)-related stocks jumped yesterday after a blockbuster order for Tesla Inc and a spinoff at BYD Co stoked optimism about the sector a day before battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co reports earnings.

Shares followed bellwether Tesla’s lead as its stock surged 13% overnight after Hertz Global Holdings Inc placed an order to buy 100,000 Teslas, the single-largest purchase ever for EVs.
