Attitudes towards money

Transformational Coach, Mentor & Trainer Sabina Shahabudin Sidhu.

HAVE you ever wondered what your attitude towards money is?

For some, money is a necessity for survival and business.

For others, it represents power, joy, security and stability as it is something valuable.

Then, there are also some who believe that money is the “root of all evil”.

Whatever the ideas and perceptions, you simply cannot live without money.

In recent times, the value of money has eroded with rising inflation.

This is because you now have to pay more for the same goods you had bought previously.

That also triggers the fear that money could deplete sooner than later if there are no means of replenishment for some.

As experts put it, your relationship with money depends on your financial mindset.

A report said your financial mindset determines if you are a saver, spender or are inclined to actively manage your finances or just ignore them.

Your attitude towards money also stems mostly from your early experiences with money.

“Most people don’t see money the way it is. They see money based on their experiences, past conditioning and upbringing,’’ said transformational coach, mentor and trainer Sabina Shahabudin Sidhu.

Soffskills Network founder and licenced professional counsellor, Heeran Kaur, added that a person’s attitude towards money may be a relationship of love, respect, neutrality, recklessness, frivolity or hate.

It depends on people’s financial experiences and where they are in their lives at a given point in time.

One of the most useful ways to look at money is as a tool – how it can be best put to use to meet our needs and wants, Heeran said.

Whatever your attitude towards money is, it is not cast in stone.

“You can change it by changing from disempowering beliefs to more empowering beliefs around money,’’ Sabina said.

To have a powerful healthy relationship Sabina recommends people assessing their relationship with money.

“Ask powerful questions such as what does money mean to you; does it make you confident or insecure?

“Do you have a scarcity or abundance mindset about money? How comfortable are you to depart with money.

“Are you impulsive about money, or conscious enough to save, spend and give away through charity?’’ said Sabina.

Once you established the understanding and awareness, then take a more empowering decision to improve and live in alignment with what is authentic for your well-being and use the right financial tools and resources to grow your wealth, Sabina said.

She said if you want to earn more money, then don’t focus on money, but change your attitude first as to how you look at money.

“(Change) your mindset from getting money to becoming a person of value.

“It will help you attract different opportunities, different avenues for financial abundance, and different levels of money that could come to you, rather than be fixated on chasing money,” she added.

If you are chasing money without adding value, then you will simply get into the loop of chasing your tail that you can never catch.

Sabina said when people understand the meaning of money and how to attract money, they will have a less emotional roller-coaster relationship with money and less drama, conflict, stress, depression and breakdown when financial challenges hit the ground.

Heeran believes the best attitude towards money is as a source of security.

First and foremost to secure yourself are things of importance like a fully-paid for home to live in that no one can take away from you and your loved ones.

That can be established with practice, through discipline and by prioritising needs over wants.

It will bring with it incredible peace of mind as a poised mind in turn equips us with sound decision-making in worldly matters, Heeran added.

If you are the type that always worries about money, it is because you are unconsciously operating on a scarcity mindset.

The unconscious scarcity mindset came from the limiting beliefs around money that had been programmed by past experiences, past conditioning and upbringing, Sabina added.

When people have money issues the first thing they do is look for external solutions.

However, it is best to check the beliefs and mindset around money first.

Sabina believes there are no external financial tools or techniques that will work until the internal problems are resolved.

“Focus towards abundance and concentrate more on being grateful, rather than scarcity. Then start living a more abundant life,” she added.

Therapists will tell you that money is about “prosperity consciousness” that comes from within you.

Remove the negative attitudes towards money and instil positive ones.

It is all about your thoughts, feelings and emotions towards money.

Be aware of your attitude and where your money is coming and going and work towards growing your wealth and if that means taking on extra jobs, so be it.
