UMW auto sales up 13% to 28,235 units in January

KUALA LUMPUR: UMW Group’s automotive sales rose 13% to 28,235 vehicles in January, compared with 24,972 units registered in the same month last year.

In a statement, it said UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) started 2023 with the delivery of 6,786 units in January.

The company plans to ramp up production for its backlog orders, especially for the orders that are eligible for the sales tax exemption, to be registered by March 31.

The Toyota Vios, Hilux and Corolla Cross continue to be the top-selling models for the month of January 2023.

“UMWT expects the demand and sales to be sustained throughout the year, supported by the introduction of new and facelift models. To further strengthen its order book, UMWT is offering special promotions as well as the Toyota EZ Beli financing option for the purchase of the Vios and Yaris,” it said.

Perodua delivered 21,449 units in January 2023, up 23% from 17,444 units registered in January 2022.

Perodua remains committed to optimising production and delivering its outstanding orders and has targeted production of 330,000 vehicles in 2023.

“After achieving its highest-ever annual sales of 282,019 units in 2022, Perodua has set a higher sales target of 314,000 units for 2023. The launch of the all-new 2023 Perodua Axia on Feb 14 is expected to drive sales this year,” it said.

UMW Holdings Bhd president and group CEO Datuk Ahmad Fuaad Kenali said: “After registering significant improvement in delivery in 2022, both UMWT and Perodua will continue to focus on fulfilling outstanding bookings, especially for those made prior to the expiry of the sales tax exemption.”

“We are cautiously optimistic that the automotive industry will continue to perform well in 2023 based on the encouraging and continuing strong bookings as well the exciting new models to be launched in 2023 to meet our customers’ requirements. We would like to thank our customers for their continuous support of our products and services.”
