PETALING JAYA: The Capital Market Graduate Programme (CMGP) aims to reduce the deficit of skilled talent in the capital market and improve graduate employability in Malaysia.

The RM30mil, three-year programme is expected to benefit 9,000 students and is looking to create employability opportunities to 600 graduates by the end of the leadership programme.

According to Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin the collaboration between the ministry and Securities Commission (SC) is to ensure that workforce, talent and human capital are sufficient and reach a high standard in line with the sector’s level.

“We do not only want to create human capital and graduates, but we want to ensure that we produce talent as well as giving the opportunity for them to get jobs with a good salary,” he said during a memorandum of understanding signing ceremony yesterday.

Mohamed Khaled stated the ministry welcomed such efforts, as they are essential in addressing the challenge of graduates’ marketability, as he believes graduate marketability is an issue that is both a measure and challenge for the ministry.

Given the programme’s prerequisites, Mohamed Khaled said that it is possible that 90% of the students that meet the requirements will be advantageous to both the organisation and the industry as a whole.

“Because at the end of the day, when entering the field, the industry will get the best talent, and as a result, benefit the industry by driving growth,” he said.

SC chairman Datuk Seri Dr Awang Adek Hussin stated that he hoped the CMGP program could act as a “matchmaker” to connect graduates and the capital market.

“The programme will reduce the deficit of skilled manpower in the capital market, in line with improving the employability of graduates,” he said.

According to Awang Adek, there will be a programme where the ministry and SC will make visits to universities as well as offer mentoring and briefings from role models from various industries.

There will also be online courses on the capital market which includes a basic course where students will be given official certifications once completed.

“The certificate will become an asset for the graduates, allowing them to be market ready in no time,” Awang Adek added.

The CMGP programme is now open for registration and will be effective from early May, which will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Students pursuing degrees and diplomas from public and private institutions, and polytechnics majoring in business, finance and economics are eligible for it.
