US Customs lifts import ban on Supermax gloves

KUALA LUMPUR: The import ban on Supermax Corp Bhd's disposable gloves in the US has been lifted following the remediation of forced labour indicators in the company's supply chain.

The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced in a Sept 19, 2023, statement it had modified the withhold release order (WRO) issued on Oct 21, 2021, and will allow imports of disposable gloves manufactured by Supermax and its wholly-owned subsidiaires effective immediately.

The group's subsidiaries were named as Supermax Glove Manufacturing, Maxter Glove Manufacturing Sdn Bhd, and Maxwell Glove Manufacturing Bhd.

The CBP said it had enforced a WRO against SUpermax and its subsidiaries based on evidence reasonably indicating the presence of 10 of the 11 International Labour Organization indicators of forced labor.

In response to the WRO, the company demonstrated to the CBP that it had taken steps to remediate the forced labor indicators identified in its supply chain.

“Today’s action underscores the ongoing impact of CBP’s enforcement efforts in driving remediation and eliminating forced labor from supply chains,” said Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner Troy A. Miller.

“Everyone is entitled to humane and dignified treatment in the workplace, no matter who they are or where they live, and that’s why this work matters.”

As at the lunch break, the trading stock of Supermax was last traded 3.5 sen or 4.32% higher at 84.5 sen a share on the back of 4.7 million shares exchanging hands.
