FBM KLCI down on selling pressure


KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia ended the day in the red in line with the weak performance of its regional peers while the ringgit edged lower against the US dollar.

At 5pm, the bellwether FBM KLCI closed down 5.24 points, or 0.35% at 1,511.34.

In the broader market, there were 390 gainers with 605 losers and 441 counters unchanged. Turnover stood at 3.22 billion shares worth RM2.12bil.

Dealers said there was profit-taking in selected index-linked counters and a lack of follow-through buying today.

Ringgit was quoted at 4.7500, down 0.7% against the US dollar.

Reuters reported that ringgit and South Korean won led losses among Asian currencies on Monday while regional bond yields rose, as investors adjusted their expectations for the Federal Reserve's policy easing after strong U.S. jobs data last week.

Among the losers on Bursa Malaysia, YTL Power slid 20 sen to RM3.74, Keck Seng fell 17 sen to RM5.62, Apollo Food lost 16 sen to RM5.30 and Amway declined 13 sen to RM6.77.

Nestle was the top gainer on Bursa Malaysia, adding 40 sen to RM120. Heineken rose 28 sen to RM24.68, Sam Engineering gained 23 sen to RM3.72 and F&N climbed 22 sen to RM28.44.

Asian markets were mostly lower today. Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.54% to 36,354.16, South Korea’s Kospi fell 0.92% to 2,591.31, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell 0.15% to 15,510.01 and China’s composite index closed down 1.02% to 2,702.18.
