Govt ordered to pay Awanbiru RM231.55mil in damages

PETALING JAYA: Awanbiru Technology Bhd, formerly known as Prestariang Bhd, has won its legal suit against the government regarding the termination of the RM3.5bil National Immigration Control System (SKIN) project, with the High Court ruling the government to pay a judgement sum of RM231.55mil.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Awanbiru said the government has been directed to pay post-judgment interest of 5% per annum on the judgement sum, calculated from the date of judgement until the judgement sum and costs are fully satisfied.

Moreover, it said the High Court has also ordered the government to cover legal costs incurred during the litigation process, totalling RM80,000, subject to final legal fees. The dispute, which granted only one-third of the company’s RM733mil claim regarding the project termination, dates back to April 2019 when Awanbiru’s wholly-owned subsidiary Prestaring Skin Sdn Bhd (PSKIN), filed the claim against the government for terminating the 15-year contractual agreement of the SKIN project.

Despite engaging in several rounds of negotiations, both parties were unable to reach a consensus on the quantum to be paid by the government, prompting PSKIN to pursue legal action.

In August 2017, PSKIN secured the RM3.5bil SKIN project from the previous administration under Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
