World Bank appoints new country director for M’sia

KUALA LUMPUR: The World Bank has appointed Zafer Mustafaoglu as its country director for the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam, effective July 1, 2024.

In a statement yesterday, it said Mustafaoglu will oversee the World Bank’s support programmes in the three countries – advancing the institution’s policy dialogues with government officials, civil society, academia, the private sector and other key stakeholders.

Mustafaoglu said he was honoured to hold the position in the three countries –some of the most vibrant economies in the East Asia region and globally, with significant achievements in economic transformation and poverty alleviation.

“I look forward to meeting our partners across government, the private sector, civil society and academic institutions to deepen my understanding of the unique development challenges these countries face and to explore how the World Bank can further contribute to their progress,” he said.

Mustafaoglu is a Turkyish national who has been with the World Bank since 2005. Prior to that, he had worked for the Turkyish government at the Prime Ministry State Planning Organisation. — Bernama
