AAX carries carries 880,265 passengers in 2Q24, surges 42% YoY

AAX said it achieved an encouraging passenger load factor of 83% in 2Q24.

PETALING JAYA: AirAsia X Bhd (AAX) carried a total of 880,265 passengers in the second quarter of 2024 (2Q24), surging 42% year-on-year (y-o-y) and surpassing the 25% y-o-y growth in its available seat per kilometre (ASK) capacity.

In a statement, AAX said it recorded an ASK capacity of 4.4 billion in 2Q24 against 3.5 billion in the corresponding period last year, as the company ramped up over the past 12 months to serve growing demand by reactivating aircraft to support its expanding network.

“The company’s passenger load factor (PLF) charted a robust 83%, up by seven percentage points y-o-y, buoyed by peak spring travel seasons in key markets and the Eid holiday period during the quarter under review.

“In terms of network, AAX resumed operations to Xi’an in April, reinforcing its presence in this core market to five destinations including Beijing, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Shanghai.”

During the quarter under review, AAX said it had further increased its flight frequencies between Kuala Lumpur and Bali to 14 times per week from nine times previously, catering to strong demand for the leisure favourite island.

“The company's associate, AirAsia X Thailand continued to deliver a solid PLF of 84% in 2Q24, increasing by six percentage points y-o-y.

“This growth was driven by a 17% y-o-y growth in the number of passengers carried for the quarter to 362,596 passengers, outperforming a 3% y-o-y growth in ASK capacity of 1.87 billion in 2Q24.

During the period under review, AAX said AirAsia X Thailand also reported a 7% y-o-y increase in the number of sectors to 1,156, as more flights were launched to cater to the rising demand within the market.

“AAX’s total fleet size remained at 18 A330s as of June 30, 2024, with 16 aircraft now activated and operational. AirAsia X Thailand’s fleet size stood at seven A330s, with six aircraft activated and operational.”
