PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Newspaper Publishers Association (MNPA) has re-elected The New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd group managing editor Datuk Ahmad Zaini Kamaruzzaman as chairman at its 51st AGM.

The meeting also saw the appointment of Star Media Group group chief executive officer Chan Seng Fatt as the new secretary and re-election of Media Chinese International executive director Liew Sam Ngan as treasurer.

In a statement, Ahmad Zaini said he was “deeply honoured” to be re-elected as chairman of the MNPA.

“This is a testament to our collective commitment to uphold the integrity and quality of journalism in Malaysia. Together, we will continue to navigate the evolving media landscape and champion the interests of our industry.”

He noted that the majority of newspaper publishers are still struggling and in the phase of economic recovery.

“With the tax increase at the beginning of 2024, the MNPA believes this is not the right time for such an increment.”

Ahmad Zaini said the MNPA has requested the government for an exemption from import duties on newspapers and a service tax exemption on newspaper advertisements but these requests were not approved.

“However, the MNPA remains resolute and will continue to appeal to the government for these tax exemptions.”

Meanwhile, Chan said he was humbled by the appointment. “Together with the team, I hope we can leave a mark of contribution for the media industry,” he said.

The MNPA is an association comprising newspaper publishers in Malaysia. It serves to promote, protect and represent the interest and welfare of the industry and its members generally.
