PETALING JAYA: MMC Group member Northport (M) Bhd breaks its record after recording the highest-ever monthly container and conventional cargo throughput in August 2024.
Northport handled a total of 365,558 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers, surpassing the previous month's numbers of 354,548 TEUs.
As for its conventional cargo throughput, Northport handled 1.15 million freight weight tonnes (FWTs) of cargo as compared to 1.14 million FWTs in July 2024.
In a statement, Northport stated that the achievement was attributable to a significant increase in ad-hoc vessel arrival as well as its ability to attract several new shipping services to its terminal.
The new shipping service routes resulted in the expansion of Northport’s network, allowing a higher volume of shipments to pass through the port.
From January to August 2024, Northport was noted to have received a total of 171 ad-hoc calls and had registered 13 new services calling at its port.
Additionally, Northport said its new container yard, Block K, which has been partially operational, was also a significant contributor to the higher volume in August.
The yard is expected to be fully completed in September 2024.
Northport chief executive officer Datuk Azman Shah Mohd Yusof said the group’s consistent monthly record-breaking performance is a reflection of Northports expanding capacity and enhanced efficiency in managing increasing cargo volumes.
“This achievement highlights our resilience and agility in responding to global challenges and the shifting dynamics of international trade.
“By continuously upgrading our infrastructure and services, we have solidified Northport's role as a crucial gateway for global shipping, capable of meeting the evolving needs of our customers in an ever-changing market,” he said.
Azman added that the latest achievement sets the group on a strong trajectory to potentially surpass its all-time high annual container and conventional cargo handling records by the end of 2024.
“We hope this record throughput will significantly contribute to our efforts in securing Port Klang's position among the top 10 busiest ports in the world in 2024,” he said.
