Fire affects Press Metal operations

Press Metal said about 9% of its total smelting capacity across Samalaju and Mukah was affected.

KUALA LUMPUR: A fire broke out at the Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Bhd’s Phase 3 smelter in Samalaju Industrial Park shortly after 11pm on Monday, but has since been extinguished, says the company.

It said the smelter, which is 80%-owned by its subsidiary Press Metal Bintulu Sdn Bhd, affected 100 pots out of the 300 pots in Phase 3 at the Samalaju smelter, while Phases 1 and 2 remained unaffected.

“We are grateful that swift evacuation procedures ensured there were no injuries or fatalities,” said Press Metal in a statement.

Press Metal said about 9% of its total smelting capacity across Samalaju and Mukah was affected.

It estimates about four months to restore operations of the damaged ports, which will impact about 3% of its annual smelting capacity on a full-year basis.
