Westports commences container terminal expansion


KUALA LUMPUR: Westports Holdings Bhd has announced the commencement of the expansion of the Westports 2 container terminal by an additional eight container terminals (CT10 to CT17), which serves as a key project in the country's preparation for additional foreign direct investments (FDI).

Westports executive chairman and group managing director Datuk Ruben Emir Gnanalingam Abdullah said the project is critical to meeting the growing demands of global trade and ensuring that the port operator continues to play a leading role in the industry.

"We are focused on growing in size and doing so sustainably, with initiatives prioritising environmental stewardship and innovation.

"The expansion project will incorporate sustainable practices and the latest technologies, ensuring we remain competitive while minimising our environmental impact," he said in a statement.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who officiated the groundbreaking ceremony, said the development of Westports 2 reflects the Unity Government’s commitment towards fostering collaborative public-private partnerships.

According to the statement, the Prime Minister elaborated on the core of the Malaysia Madani vision, which focuses on problem-solving, meeting the people’s needs, and building a peaceful and prosperous future for Malaysia.

Separately, Ruben said Westports would commemorate its 30th anniversary by increasing its CSR commtment and programmes by a minimum of RM1mil annually for the development of Pulau Indah and its surrounding areas.
