Opportunity for Johor entrepreneurs to learn about growth in Asean


Legal expertise: Lee will share insights on key aspects of international trade.

Petaling Jaya: The Global Navigator Series (GNS) Johor edition is set to take place on Monday, Oct 21.

The event promises to deliver valuable insights as industry experts dive into strategies for established exporters aiming to thrive in the dynamic Asean region. Experts at the event will be participating in a panel discussion titled “Thriving in Asean: Expert Strategies for Established Exporters”.

Moderating the session will be Lee Ting Kiat who currently serves as the chairman of the southern region for the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI).

He is also the independent non-executive chairman of MTAG Group Bhd and an independent director of Hup Seng Industries Bhd, and serves on the board of governors at Invictus International School in Johor Baru.

A lawyer by profession, he graduated with honours in law from the University of Malaya in 1991 and was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1992.

He is the managing partner of Messrs Lee & Tengku Azrina, a firm he co-founded in 2005. Prior to that, he was a partner at Messrs Zaid Ibrahim & Co.

Lee’s deep knowledge on various areas of law, ranging from corporate and commercial, mergers and acquisitions, financing, and property development enables him to guide the GNS discussions on key aspects of international trade, legal compliance, and market expansion.

Joining him as a panelist is Ronnie Faizal Tan who will share valuable insights from his experience leading Mustafa’s Pte Ltd’s overseas expansion, highlighting how businesses can capitalise on the immense opportunities within the Asean market.

Tan started his career in corporate gifts before diversifying into telecommunications in 2006. In 2012, he founded Singapore-based My Outlets, specialising in halal food, beverages, and consumer products.

He regularly speaks at international forums and has also hosted dignitaries and trade missions.

In 2016, he was among the top finalists of the Entrepreneur Award organised by the Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SMCCI).

Tan was appointed executive in residence for Halal Industrialisation by SMCCI in 2022 and has coached over 30 companies in growing in the halal industry.

Lee and Tan will be joined by Brandt Business Service founder and chief executive officer Datuk Dr Munirah Looi, Standard Chartered Singapore head of trade and global business banking Alan Ng and Matrade’s director of the China and North-east Asia and Asean and Oceania Section Mazlan Harun, who will be bringing their expertise to the table.

The closing presentation will be given by Matrade’s Asean and Oceania section senior manager Rosmizah Mat Jusoh who brings with her over 14 years of experience at Matrade, having served in various senior capacities. She was trade commissioner in Vietnam from 2022 to 2024, and prior to that, held the same position in Turkiye from 2018 to 2022.

Her previous roles at Matrade also include managing the Mid-Tier Companies Development Programme and exporters development division, as well as leading units focused on the chemical industry, ICT, and South Asian markets.

This diverse experience has allowed her to gain deep expertise in market access, export promotion, and the development of Malaysian exporters – all of which will contribute to her presentation as she discusses the future of Malaysian exports in Asean.

There will also be a chat session where Standard Chartered Malaysia chief executive officer Mak Joon Nien will be discussing the growing role of Malaysia and Asean in global trade with the Indonesian Consul-General in Johor Baru Sigit Suryantoro Widiyanto and Johor Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Lee Ting Han.

KJH Wood Industrial executive director Joanne Tay has also been invited to share her success story, experiences and lessons in entering new markets, overcoming obstacles and implementing strategies that have led to the company’s success in exports.

An initiative by the Export Excellence Awards (EEA) 2024, the GNS will be held at St Giles Southkey, Johor Baru on Oct 21, 2024 at 9:30am.

The EEA 2024 is organised by Star Media Group in partnership with Standard Chartered Malaysia, and PKT Logistics Group as a co-sponsor, and Matrade as patron. It is audited by BDO.
