HANOI: As many as 175,000 people have benefited from the Phu My new urban wastewater collection, treatment and drainage project, which was officially put into operation in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province last Wednesday.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Ngyen Cong Vinh, vice-chairman of the province’s People’s Committee, said the project plays an important role in the economic and social development plan of Phu My town in particular and the province in general.

“This is a project of cooperation between the governments of Vietnam and the Netherlands in the province,” he said.

The project will solve environmental pollution, and aim for sustainable development for Phu My’s new urban area.

Construction of the project started in 2019 with a total capital of more than 818.4 billion dong or about US$32.2mil.

Non-refundable official development assistance capital from the government of the Netherlands totalled nearly 31%, while matching capital from the provincial budget was about 69%.

The project includes the My Xuan wastewater treatment plant with the capacity to handle 29,700 cubic metres per day with facilities such as inlet pressure and flow measuring systems, refuse tank and grease separation tank, contact and mixing tank, final clarifier, chlorine tank and power system.

The wastewater collection system will collect wastewater from the Phu My urban area to four locations in My Xuan and Tan Phuoc wards.

The project ensures that the output wastewater reaches Vietnamese standards and the target is to thoroughly solve wastewater drainage for the Phu My urban area as it grows.

It also solves urban pollution, preserves environmental sustainability, and creates favourable conditions for the development plan of the area in the future.

Consul General of the Netherlands in Ho Chi Minh City Daniel Coenraad Stork said the Dutch government, through a Facility for Infrastructure Development grant, was proud to support the development and implementation of the project.

“Through projects like this, we can protect vital water resources, enhance public health, and create opportunities for businesses in both of our nations.”

This project is one of several key initiatives that reflect the Netherland’s long-term commitment to promoting trade, investment, and sustainable solutions in the region.

The grant was funded by the Dutch Foreign Affairs Ministry and implemented by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency. — Viet Nam News/ANN
