KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) will continue advancing its efforts into energy transition as it renews its commitment of working together with the government to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Razak Abdul Majid said in line with the National Energy Transition Roadmap, key initiatives had been set up and are ongoing.
“We have embarked on this range of programmes that will try to reduce our carbon emission by a certain target.
“So along the way we have to take on the initiatives to reduce the content of carbon that we emit from our power plants,” he told reporters after a ceremony to commemorate its 75th anniversary here yesterday.
Among them is working with Petroliam Nasional Bhd with the aim of advancing new technologies like using hydrogen in conjunction with its solar hybrid farms.
Abdul Razak said simultaneously, TNB is attempting to increase green content by allowing rooftop solar connections.
“We are encouraging the local players to take part in using the facilities, we will allow third party players to generate power and if there is a buyer, they can sell to the buyer. They will have to use our transmission lines,” he said.
He added another initiative from TNB was seeking interconnections with neighbouring countries like Thailand, Laos and Singapore.
Last year, it inked two strategic partnerships with Indonesia and Singapore in an effort to create an interconnected Asean Power Grid, thus enhancing energy resilience, security and promoting the integration of renewable energy across the region.
Chief executive officer Datuk Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan said the latest initiative under the Asean Power Grid involved a transfer of power between Malaysia and Singapore through LTMS, which is the Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore project.
“At the moment, we have anchored with Singapore to actually import from TNB.
“Last night, there was a transaction for 2½ hours. So this is the second transaction that happened, the first one was last month,” he said.
Megat Jalaluddin added this was a good start to the commercial transactions for the Asean Power Grid.
“Part of the transaction will also provide us with the study in terms of the price discovery and at the same time, because we are connecting two utilities, we want to understand better how to operate the system,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who attended the event, announced that the salaries of all TNB employees will be increased.
He said TNB’s board of directors and senior management agreed to be the first government-linked company to answer the government’s call to raise the minimum wage for employees.
Abdul Razak said whatever that is being offered to employees will be in line with what the company can afford.
“We will offer what we think is a fair amount of reward our employees. Before we can do anything, we will take it to the board to discuss since they’ve agreed to lift the minimum wage,” he said.
He added that all TNB employees will be positively impacted.
