PETALING JAYA: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has signed a deal with Sembcorp Power Pte Ltd (Sembcorp Power), a wholly owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries, for the supply of renewable energy.
In a statement yesterday, the national electric company said, under a renewable-energy supply agreement, Sembcorp Power had secured a 50 megawatt (MW) allocation of green electricity with renewable-energy certification through a bidding process that took place in June.
The energy will come from solar and hydro generation in Malaysia, with the green electricity then being transmitted to Singapore using existing Malaysia-Singapore infrastructure.
TNB said the alliance was part of the Cross-border Electricity Sales for Renewable Energy (CBES RE) scheme, in alignment with the Asean Power Grid initiative.
It is also part of Malaysia’s energy-transition goals, which include facilitating renewable-energy trade with neighbouring countries through Energy Exchange Malaysia (Enegem).
The bidding process through Enegem was part of the Energy Transition and and Water Transformation Ministry’s efforts under CBES RE for the phased supply of up to 300MW using the existing connection between Malaysia and Singapore.
TNB chief executive officer Datuk Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan said that the establishment of Enegem and the successful execution of the agreement is a reflection of the group’s commitment to fostering regional energy integration and advancing Asean’s renewable-energy goals.
“This initiative positions Malaysia as a key player in green-electricity trading and promotes energy security, efficiency and sustainability across the region,” Megat Jalaluddin said.
Meanwhile, TNB said the Asean Power Grid aims to create a sustainable interconnected energy ecosystem for the region.
“Currently, the interconnection capacity between Malaysia and Singapore stands at 1,000MW, with 300MW allocated for the CBES RE Scheme and 200MW for the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project,” TNB said.
The alliance was further strengthened after the signing of the Cross-border Power Trade Interconnection Agreement between TNB and SP PowerAssets Ltd in September.
TNB added the first 50MW contribution under the pilot phase of the CBES RE Scheme highlights Malaysia’s potential as a regional hub for green electricity.
“By leveraging Enegem, this initiative sets the foundation for future expansion and long-term collaborations, ultimately driving decarbonisation and strengthening regional energy security.
“TNB remains steadfast in driving Asean’s energy transformation. Through Enegem and our smart grid investments, we are committed to delivering sustainable energy solutions and achieving Malaysia’s net-zero aspirations.”
