PETALING JAYA: YTL Power International Bhd’s artificial intelligence (AI) innovation unit, YTL AI Labs, has launched Ilmu 0.1, a Malaysian large language model (LLM), during the unveiling of the National AI Office by the Digital Ministry.

Benchmarked against the Malay MMLU (massive multitask language understanding), the internationally recognised standard for the Malay language in LLMs, Ilmu 0.1 outperforms other LLMs globally in Bahasa Melayu, according to YTL Power’s statement released yesterday.

Notably, it has successfully passed both PT3 and SPM national exams in the Malay language, underscoring its potential to support various sectors effectively in local applications and use cases.

“The launch of Ilmu 0.1 is a significant milestone for Malaysia. A Malaysian LLM that understands Bahasa Melayu and Malaysian local culture and context is crucial in advancing applications in all industries, including finance, education, healthcare and public services.” said Lou Yeoh, executive director of YTL AI Labs.

“Ilmu is truly Malaysian intelligence.”

The LLM will be supported by YTL Power’s AI power data centre, currently under construction in Johor.

The YTL AI Supercomputer, equipped with Nvidia GB200 Grace Blackwell Superchip, will be housed in a 1,640-acre facility at the YTL Green Data Centre Campus in Johor.

Powered by renewable energy from its on-site 500 megawatt solar power facility, this supercomputer is designed to meet the demand for highly scalable, high performance cloud-based solutions for AI/ML workloads.

“Malaysia has huge potential to become an AI hub for the region and the world, and in so doing will generate high quality jobs and boost the economy.

“By building a world class AI infrastructure and ecosystem, we look forward to working with the government towards the establishment of Malaysia as an AI nation with its own sovereign AI cloud and sovereign LLM.

“We are committed to working with international partners and local scientists to continue to develop Ilmu into a globally top performing LLM,” said Datuk Seri Yeoh Seok Hong, managing director of YTL Power.

YTL Power has to date made an investment of over RM20bil in Malaysia in the AI space, and is working with the government to build Malaysia into an AI hub with world class AI infrastructure and a thriving local AI ecosystem.
