Malaysia's IPI up by 2.1% in January this year

Chief statistician Dr Mohd Uzir said the increase in IPI was mainly contributed by output growth in the manufacturing sector.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) increased by 2.1% year-on-year in January 2025, led by growth in manufacturing sector output, according to the Statistics Department.

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the increase in IPI was mainly contributed by output growth in the manufacturing sector, which grew at a slower rate of 3.7% in January 2025 compared to 5.8% in December 2024.

“Conversely, the mining and electricity sector production (in January 2025) recorded a decrease of 3.1% and 0.1%, respectively,” he said in a statement. On a month-on-month basis, he noted the IPI in January 2025 still contracted at the same rate as in the previous month, which stood at negative 0.4%.

Commenting on the performance of the mining sector, Mohd Uzir said the 3.1% contraction in the mining sector in January 2025 was driven by a double-digit decrease of 10% in crude petroleum and condensate output, while natural gas production maintained a stable growth of 1.4%.

Meanwhile, he said the electricity index declined at a rate of 0.1% in January 2025, compared to a 3.5% increase in the previous month.

Separately, the Statistics Department announced that Malaysia’s manufacturing sector sales value increased by 3.5% in January 2025, amounting to RM158.1bil.

Mohd Uzir said the growth was primarily supported by the food, beverages and tobacco sub-sector which recorded a robust growth of 10.6% in January 2025, from 14.6% in December 2024.

This was followed by the electrical and electronics products and non-metallic mineral products, basic metal and fabricated metal products sub-sectors. — Bernama
