Food carts get appetites rolling

HAWKER-style carts in an indoor setting serving up nostalgic cuisines do make one eager to dive in and taste dishes prepared for the break of fast.

The hawker favourites are prominently featured at Dorsett Grand Subang this Ramadan on its “Citarasa Malaysia” buffet.

Due to the popularity of Middle Eastern flavours, the Roasted Baby Lamb with Arabic Mandi Rice, BBQ Minced Lamb skewers with tahini as well as hummus, mint leaves and lemon wedges are decked out on the cart.

There is also a chicken shawarma stand nearby where the meat is sliced off the vertical rotisserie.

The ever popular northern favourite of prawn noodles also gets its pride of place at a stall.

Other popular bazaar delights served on carts include roti john and assorted pisang goreng.

There are also stalls for the hearty Gearbox Soup (the bone marrow soup), satay, lamb and chicken tandoori as well as an ABC Corner.

Malay cuisine chef Muhd Anwardy Mahat said that in displaying a buffet, the goal was to make it as simple as possible while adding a touch of elegance to the finished product to appeal to diners.

“Nothing is out of the ordinary, instead we make refinements to the food and necessary changes to meet our customers’ taste buds,” he said.

The Roasted Baby Lamb is a new addition to the Ramadan buffet.

“The Roasted Baby Lamb is popular as lamb is a more expensive meat and it is included on the ‘Citarasa Malaysia’ buffet so diners can relish its simplicity yet appetising taste,” he said.

In the buffet are traditional Malaysian favourites such as Gulai Kawah Daging, Udang Masak Lemak Cili Api, Vegetable Dalca, Stir-fried Kailan with Salted Fish as its mixture of Malaysian side dishes.

One that I kept refilling my plate with is the Ikan Goreng Berlada because it reminded me of the days I spent in Negri Sembilan.

The Roasted Baby Lamb with Arabic Mandi Rice was a terrific choice and I went back for second and third helpings but opted not to have any more of the Mandi Rice as it was too filling.

The outdoor area also offers Musang King durian but this comes with an additional RM130nett per fruit for those having the Citarasa Malaysia Buffet.

There is a combination of Malay and Western desserts with the likes of mango pudding, caramel pudding, cakes as well as traditional Malay kuih.

The “Citarasa Malaysia” buffet is available until April 20, priced at RM168 nett (adults), RM138 nett (senior citizen above the age of 60) and RM90nett (children).
