Real deal Penang popiah

Laden with sweet turnip gravy, popiah doesn’t need to be crunchy to be super tasty. — Photos: KYSPEAKS

Penang popiah is wet, did you know that?

This version sold at the hawker stalls opposite SJK (C) Shang Wu in Ayer Itam, Penang, is one of my favourites — under-rated Penang hawker dish, if you ask me.

The seller has been operating this stall for more than 20 years.

I used to come here for lunch after school. Just so you know, Penang popiah is a lot softer and wetter, instead of crunchy like the ones sold in KL. The umami is through the roof and I love it!

The ingredients are mustard green, tofu, turnip, fried shallot, egg and there’s even crab meat inside.

Yours for only RM2 per piece for authentic Penang-style popiah!
