A RARE moment of awesome.
That’s what you get when you dig into the iconic juicy burgers and plunge into the milkshakes of your wildest dreams at Black Tap Craft Burger and Shakes.
Opening its doors at Sunway Resort Hotel, Bandar Sunway, Malaysians can now have an immersive experience at this New York-based global chain.
The first-ever Black Tap venture in Malaysia is an edgy, urban and casual restaurant reminiscent of a classic American luncheonette, with distinctly NYC vibes complete with ’80s and ’90s hip-hop and pop music as well as art-covered walls.
Owned by husband-and-wife team Chris Barish and Julie Mulligan, Black Tap first arrived on the New York food scene as a small burger joint in 2015.
It has since expanded to several other locations in the United States including The Venetian Resort Las Vegas, Downtown Disney District at Disneyland Resort and internationally in Bahrain, Singapore, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates.
Black Tap’s menu offers something for everyone, ranging from their signature burgers such as the All-American and Falafel burgers to fan-favourite Wagyu Steakhouse Burger, chicken sandwiches, salads, wings, snacks and sides.
The Wagyu Steakhouse Burger is by far my favourite among the dishes served during a visit to the restaurant.
Sandwiched between two sesame buns was a piece of 220g Australian A3 Wagyu patty.
It has a balance of fat marbling and lean meat, making the patty juicy and tender.
The beefy dish was paired splendidly with pepper jack cheese, bacon, crispy onions, roasted garlic aioli and A1 steak sauce.
Another burger that rivalled the Wagyu Steakhouse in taste and presentation was the Texan Burger.
Its Australian Angus beef patty comes with aged cheddar, crispy onion ring, bacon, Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce and mayonnaise.
The bacon’s crispiness adds another texture to the dish while the creamy cheddar accentuates the beef, making every bite mouthwateringly perfect.
The Percik Grilled Chicken Sandwich, which is a dish exclusive to Black Tap Malaysia, adds a local touch to the menu.
Compared to the traditional percik recipe, this is a simplified version with a milder level of spiciness.
The sandwich featuring grilled marinated spicy chicken thigh and percik sauce was served with chilli caramelised onion, pico de gallo, tzatziki sauce, red chilli, spring onion and coriander.
In celebration of Black Tap’s expansion to Nashville, Tennessee in the US, the restaurant is also serving the Hot Chicken Sandwich for a limited time.
This sandwich comes with a crispy chicken soaked in hot chilli oil, seasoned with a blend of Asian chilies, Italian spices and black garlic hot rub, topped with pickle chips and buttermilk dill.
The Atomic Shrimp is another limited-edition speciality where the shrimp is deep-fried and topped with Asian spices, then served on a bowl of dry coleslaw, Boston leaf lettuce, sesame seeds and scallions.
Equally renowned at Black Tap are its CrazyShakes.
Unlike normal milkshakes, these ridiculously crazy concoctions will blow your mind.
The Brooklyn Blackout CrazyShake is a rich chocolate shake adorned with a chocolate-frosted rim mixed with mini chocolate chips, topped with a chocolate brownie, whipped cream and chocolate drizzle.
The shake is thick, velvety and packed with an intense chocolate flavour, where each sip feels like plunging into a pool of chocolate deliciousness.
Another work-of-art treat is the Sweet N Salty CrazyShake, which comes with chocolate-frosted rim, chocolate gems and studded withpeanut butter cups, topped with a Sugar Daddy candy, pretzel rods, chocolate-covered pretzels, whipped cream and chocolate drizzle.
This sweet and salty dessert as the name suggests oozes a harmonious balance of sweet and salty flavours on the palate.
Other items to try at the restaurant include the Pizza Burger, Zhoug Lamb Burger, white miso bbq chicken wings, Idaho fries, Asian sweet corn as well as the classic shakes that come in nine flavours.
