Scoot over ‘nasi lemak’ for bagel and English muffin takeaways
BREAKFAST for takeaway in Malaysia is typically nasi lemak or roti canai.
However, two friends hatched a plan to provide options.
Their Breakfast.co idea has garnered attention for providing affordable Western-style breakfast meals.
Situated in Serasa Garden, Taman Melawati, Ulu Kelang, the food stall was started by Ruszaidi Alias, 34, and Hafiz Said, 46.
Ruszaidi said the initial inspiration came from his fondness for English muffins, a breakfast item commonly sold by fast food chains.
“English muffins are a delightful, light breakfast option yet it’s not widely available.
“I shared this idea with Hafiz, who was a chef at the time, and he agreed that it was a fantastic concept.
“We identified a market opportunity for Western-inspired breakfast meals as we noticed a gap in the market, particularly in the street food scene.”
Among their top-selling items are the Big Supreme Breakfast, English muffin sandwich and pulled beef bagel.
The Big Supreme Breakfast is the most popular among customers, with sales reaching up to 80 sets per day.
It features a combination of charcoal focaccia, beef bacon, hash brown, omelette, mushroom, sausage and hot sauce.
This ensemble of flavours and ingredients creates a satisfying, hearty meal.
What blew me away was the pulled beef bagel.
The bread roll had a firm, pleasantly chewy texture and was complemented by the pulled beef that melted in the mouth, delivering a delightful, savoury flavour.
If you order this, have napkins at the ready as the flavourful beef juices drip freely after just one bite.
Diners also have the option of customising fillings.
Head cook Hafiz said the stall sourced its bagels and English muffins locally.
“I developed the recipe and oversaw the entire process. Initially, we imported bagels from the US but that became expensive,” he said.
“So, we embarked on a search for local bakeries capable of producing our recipe, which proved to be a challenge as some were unable to meet our standards.
“Eventually, we discovered a bakery that could craft them to our satisfaction.”
He said they aspired to produce everything in-house but would rely on external collaboration for now.
“We value all feedback and criticism, he added.
“We have revised numerous menus to ensure customer satisfaction and there is immense joy in witnessing people relish our food.”
Breakfast.co has two branches – there is a stall at the open-air site Lepaking in Gombak beside the Taman Melawati eatery.
The stall operates from Tuesday to Sunday, serving customers from 8am to midnight.
