The right amount of indulgence

DESSERT lovers who want to savour treats that do not overwhelm the palate can try a cafe in Bandar Baru Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur, that specialises in making brownies.

Mr & Mrs Brownie offers more than 20 different flavours of the chocolate baked treat, all with just the right amount of sweetness.

Such precise sweetness is rooted in owner and founder Yuki Chiu’s patient trial-and-error efforts in locating suitable recipes that cater to Malaysian tastes.

“I didn’t create my own original brownie recipes.

“I tweaked the recipes I came across by adjusting their sweetness, texture and baking time to adapt to Malaysian preferences, as most customers say they often find desserts to be too sweet.

“The amount of sugar must be just right to maintain a glossy brownie crust while not overwhelming customers’ taste buds,” she said.

The brownies, priced between RM6.50 and RM11 per piece, come in four basic flavours, namely dark chocolate, white chocolate, red velvet and matcha.

Various combinations of these four flavours make up the rest of the brownie options on the cafe’s menu.

A personal favourite was the signature Dark Chocolate Brownie which had a nice balance of flavours from the mild bitterness of the dark chocolate, tartness of grapes and delicately sweet ice cream.

For those who favour something sweeter, the Almond Caramel Blondie is topped with slightly chewy caramel.

Chiu said Mr & Mrs Brownie also serves a selection of hot meals for customers who prefer something more filling, before enjoying their desserts.

The cafe’s version of The Big Breakfast consists of homemade toasted bread paired with chicken sausage, beef bacon and creamy scrambled egg topped with herbs (RM18.90).

The Xin Korean Ramen with crispy egg and chicken strips (RM17.90) will appeal to those who want a savoury noodle dish, while the chocolate- flavoured French Toast (RM10) topped with fruits is a visually appealing dish and toothsome.

Other hot meals available include Cheese Paratha with chicken ham slices and Chocolate Soft Bun with Nutella spread, banana and grape. These are priced between RM8 and RM18.90.

Mr & Mrs Brownie also serves a wide range of beverages, ranging from coffee and tea to mocktails, which are priced from RM12 to RM16 each.

Its signature Matcha Latte balances the bitterness of matcha with the creaminess of milk, while the slightly sweet Rose Caffe Latte stands out with the elegant dried rose petals scattered atop the drink.

The minimalist cafe located on a bustling street is also a good spot for photos.

Chiu, whose favourite colour is white, said the stark interior was meant to attract those who enjoy taking photos of the places they visit and food that they eat.
