Encounter with Apollo

Aegean Blue Salad with Smoked Salmon.

It’s a sea of calm at Aegean Blue, a Greek restaurant located inside New Ocean Fine Food City in Petaling Jaya.

A harp is displayed at the entrance, alongside a projected image of Apollo the sun god on the floor. At the far end of the restaurant is a white life-size statue of Apollo, flanked by Roman columns. The name Aegean Blue refers to a dark shade of blue on the colour palette, with a tinge of teal green.

Such an interesting set-up, preparing the scene for our Greek culinary adventure ahead.

Our first Greek dish, Ammos Moussaka, made a good impression. Layered with slices of eggplant, potato and minced beef, topped with cheese and baked, and then served on tomato gravy sprinkled with finely chopped parsley, it was almost like a lasagne.

The baked moussaka came with Kefalotyri cheese and bechamel sauce covering the top. Kefalotyri is a hard cheese from Greece and Cyprus, made from sheep or goat’s milk. It’s salty, tangy and slightly pungent. The melted cheese was delicious together with the layers of minced beef, eggplant, potato and tomato gravy.

Another main course – Panfried Sea Bass Fillet with Dill Sauce, Orzo and Mushrooms – was another standout item. One of two main courses offered in the set menu for lunch, the fish fillet sat on a creamy sauce with hints of fragrant dill. Beneath it was orzo, a rice-like pasta that was perfect for soaking up the lovely sauce.

Roasted Chicken Leg with Mashed Potato and BBQ Sauce was the other option for main course in the set. It came across as ordinary, but the chicken was roasted well with a smoky aroma. The chicken tasted even better when dredged through the flavourful gravy cooked with butter, honey and BBQ sauce.

The soup of the day was the smooth, flavourful Mixed Vegetable Soup. Or, one could also choose to have the appetiser of Mixed Greek Salad with grilled chicken and fresh cheese instead. The chicken was sprinkled liberally with paprika, served with cauliflower, broccoli and potatoes in a creamy dressing.

The three-course set lunch with a drink was a reasonable RM55+, considering how the portions were quite generous.

We also tried another soup from the a la carte menu, the Kolokythosoupa or velvety pumpkin cream that lived up to its name. Besides the smooth, creamy texture, I liked the light sweetness. The soup came with thin crispy garlic toast.

The Aegean Blue Salad with Smoked Salmon was a pretty platter with rosettes of salmon, olives and cherry tomatoes, romaine lettuce and melon. A streak of balsamico and crème fraiche in the centre, brought it all together.

Other recommended dishes from this menu include the Grilled Octopus with Fennel, Stewed Lamb Leg, Greek Style, and the Panna Cotta Ginger & Poached Pear. There is also a five-course set dinner available at RM120+.
