THINK high-end furniture and one of the first names that comes to mind is Rozel. With its distinctly European style and ever increasing presence, Rozel is an unqualified success story. Nonetheless, a meeting with the man behind Rozel provided a surprise or two.
For one thing, he’s not European, nor does he have any continental connections. No, this is an entirely home-grown enterprise that began with one store in Jalan Kelang Lama, Kuala Lumpur, in 1991. Since then, Rozel founder Gan Tai Hwa (pic) has overseen almost continuous growth, opening outlets at a rate of one a year. There are now 17 Rozel establishments spread across the Klang Valley and a number of state capitals, including Kuching, Kuantan and Johor Baru. Furthermore, Rozel’s sister company, Ofitalia, the high-end office furniture brand, opened in 2005 and also has grown to seven outlets.
