MOST of us know the famous story behind N°5 : The idea sprang from a conversation that Coco Chanel had with her friends, the painter José Maria Sert and his wife Misia, while holidaying in the south of France in 1920. Chanel then told le nez (or the nose), Ernest Beaux, what she wanted: un parfum de femme, à l’odeur de femme (the scent and smell of a woman).
“Women do not want to smell like a bed of roses,” she insisted.
