The Sarawak Museum Department recently unveiled an exhibition titled Pristine Seas: Bringing Back The Ocean, presented by the National Geographic Society, at the Borneo Cultures Museum in Kuching.

The event was officiated by Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts.

The exhibition showcases over a decade of global expeditions by the National Geographic Pristine Seas project to document and protect the ocean, aiming to promote healing, recovery, and regeneration.

In his speech, Abdul Karim said that the exhibition not only celebrates the splendour of marine life and oceans but also raises awareness of the project’s mission.

He added that it serves as a powerful reminder to respect and protect our oceans and marine ecosystems.

"The Pristine Seas project aims to restore the ocean's health and productivity while enhancing the livelihoods of coastal communities by protecting marine ecosystems from overfishing. This initiative has been a remarkable success - one we aspire to emulate here in Sarawak.

"This approach aligns well with Sarawak’s objectives, which emphasise sustainable development, collaboration with local communities, and the preservation of natural ecosystems to achieve the state’s vision of a thriving society by 2030,” he said.

The exhibition, featuring breathtaking imagery, videos and compelling stories that showcase the scientific methods behind these expeditions, will be running at the Borneo Cultures Museum until April 2025. - Bernama
