Brendan Fraser is opening up about the lengths he went to transform his body for his ripped role in the 1997 film George Of The Jungle.

Fraser discussed his physical transformation, which required minimum wardrobe, during an episode of Variety's Actors on Actors video series with Adam Sandler, published Tuesday (Dec 6).

"The wardrobe was, there was no wardrobe," Fraser, 54, joked to Sandler, 56. "George wears a loincloth."

Sandler marvelled at how Fraser became "very jacked" for the part and expressed some playful jealousy. Before George Of The Jungle, Fraser starred with Sandler and Steve Buscemi in the 1994 film Airheads, about three rock musicians in a band.

"You weren't supposed to do that to us," Sandler joked. "You did right by the character, but you did wrong by us, man. You made us feel bad about ourselves. Were you oiled up at all during George?"

Fraser replied: "Oh, I was waxed, greased, starved of carbohydrates."

Fraser also recalled how his strict diet impacted his ability to think straight.

"I would drive home after work and stop to get something to eat. And I needed some cash one day, and I went to the ATM, and I could not remember my PIN number because my brain was misfiring," he said, adding he was "banging on the" ATM to get some cash.

"I didn't eat that night," he continued.

Fraser also stars in Darren Aronofsky's The Whale, which opens in US theatres on Dec 9. In the film, Fraser plays a reclusive English teacher living with obesity who attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter. – USA Today/Tribune News Service
