American actor Tyler Perry – who starred in Alex Cross and Don't Look Up – revealed in the final episode of Netflix’s Harry & Meghan docuseries that he is the godfather of the Sussexes’ daughter, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.
The 53-year-old Hollywood star said that the royal couple personally contacted him via phone call.
"We'll chat and talk about silly things, and they were pretty serious on the phone. I go, 'OK, what's going on?' ... and they said, 'We'd like for you to be Lili's godfather'," Perry shared, adding that he was honoured to take on the role.
His connection to Harry and Meghan began after he wrote the former Suits actress a note before her royal wedding, saying that "he would be there for her" if she needed advice.
The Duchess revealed in the docuseries that she didn't reach out to Perry until a year later when she travelled to Vancouver with Harry and her son, Archie, in 2019.
She recalled breaking down in tears as she told him about her concerns.
"The first time we ever spoke and I was a wreck. I was just crying and crying. Sometimes, it's easier to open up to someone who knows nothing at all. And that was that moment with me and Tyler," she said.
Perry's bond with the Sussexes became stronger after he allowed them to stay at his Los Angeles home when they left Canada.
Meghan recounted the actor urging them to stay for as long as they needed, stressing that he would keep them safe by providing "round-the-clock security".
"He said, 'You're not going to stay a week. You’re going to stay as long as you need. I'm going to get you there (his mansion) safely, and I'm going to keep you there safely until you have somewhere to go'," she shared.
According to British media, Harry and Meghan spent a few months staying at Perry's Beverly Hills house before relocating to their own US$14.6mil (RM64.8mil) mansion in California.
