After a series of shakeups at Warner Bros., it's official: Black Adam won't be a part of the first phase of DC's new chapter as plans for a sequel have been halted.
Dwayne Johnson, who plays the modern-day superhero, confirmed the "long-awaited" news on Twitter after a conversation with filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran.
"Black Adam will not be in their first chapter of storytelling," Johnson wrote in a lengthy statement Tuesday (Dec 20).
"However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters."
While the decision, which Johnson says was made by Gunn and DC leadership, is disappointing, Johnson reassured fans that he "will always root for DC (and Marvel) to win and WIN BIG".
"After 15 years of relentless hard work to finally make Black Adam, I'm very proud of the film we delivered for fans worldwide. I will always look back on the fan reaction to Black Adam with tremendous gratitude, humility and love," he said.
"To my very passionate and vocal Black Adam/Super Hero genre fans – I love you, THANK YOU, and I will ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOU and do my best to deliver and entertain you."
Gunn also confirmed the news on social media, responding that he is "always excited to see what (Johnson) & Seven Bucks do next. Can't wait to collaborate soon."
The news comes one week after Henry Cavill revealed on Instagram he would not be reprising his role as Superman.
"I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it's sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman... The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that," wrote the actor who portrayed Superman in 2013's Man Of Steel, 2016's Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and 2017's Justice League.
That same week, filmmaker Patty Jenkins also confirmed that DC Films would not be moving forward with the third installment of Wonder Woman. – USA Today/Tribune News Service
