TVB star Mat Yeung started his 18-day jail sentence on Dec 22 after he lost an appeal for careless driving.

According to South China Morning Post, the judge "found sufficient basis to jail Yeung as he was under the influence of alcohol when he crashed his black Mercedes-Benz in Mid-Levels two years ago, adding the artist had failed to learn from his past driving offences". (Yeung was previously arrested for DUI in 2005.)

This meant Yeung spent Christmas and will usher in 2023 behind bars at Lai Chi Kok Correctional Institution, in Kowloon, Hong Kong.

The 41-year-old's girlfriend, Hong Kong-based Malaysian actress Lisa Ch'ng visited the actor a day after he went to jail. Hong Kong media reported that Ch'ng had with her a bag, believed to be containing daily necessities for the TVB star.

The 35-year-old was accompanied by an older couple, who are said to be Yeung's parents.

When approached by reporters, Ch'ng was tight-lipped but only said: "Thank you for your concern, thank you for your concern, (Mat's) OK."

Cheung will be released on Jan 8.
