Malaysian model-actress Yumi Wong, known as the “Angelababy” of Malaysia, recently opened up about her struggles with depression for 13 years.
In an Instagram Story on Wednesday (Dec 28), the 33-year-old uploaded a photo revealing her weight (44.5kg) and wrote: “Depression is something that can make people lose weight quickly. I lost 3kg”.
The post garnered the attention of many netizens who then voiced their concerns about Wong’s health.
Answering the questions raised using the platform’s Q&A function, the actress revealed that she had been suffering from depression for almost 13 years.
“I get along well with myself now but it (depression) is something that still attacks me occasionally,” she said, adding that it was something she was born with.
Reflecting on the cause of depression, Wong explained that it could be because she was the only child in the family. She said that she used to be “out of tune with the world” which made her feel very lonely.
“I was always excluded during my middle school years. At one point, I decided to come out to society. I felt the love of the world and the kindness of many people. This greatly helped me to improve my mental health,” she wrote.
Noting that she wasn’t the only one struggling with mental health, Wong shared some tips on how to cope with depression such as consulting a psychiatrist, meditating, listening to “happy music” and chatting with loved ones among others.
“There’s no need to be afraid. Don’t feel that you’re alone. We who suffer from depression must stay strong together,” she said.
At the moment, Wong is working together with Hong Kong actor Philip Keung for a new movie, Lock War.
The film is funded by award-winning Hong Kong actor Louis Koo and is currently being filmed in Penang.
Wong is best known for her role in the Chinese film, The Bloody Tale Of The Six Doors. She was also a nominee in TC Candler’s Top 100 Most Beautiful Faces for four consecutive years.
