Former Nickelodeon star Amanda Bynes has been placed on a 72-hour psychiatric hold after she was found roaming the streets of Los Angeles naked, TMZ reported.

According to the publication, Bynes was spotted wandering near downtown Los Angeles early Sunday (March 19) morning without any clothes on.

The 36-year-old reportedly flagged down a car and told the driver that she was "coming down from a psychotic episode" before calling 911 herself.

Bynes, who was unharmed during the incident, was then taken to a nearby police station where the mental health team determined she needed to be placed on a 5150 psychiatric hold, law enforcement sources told TMZ.

A 5150 is a legal action which allows an officer to confine someone for 72 hours – though it can be extended – to assess their mental health status.

Bynes is said to be receiving treatment in hospital following the incident and will remain there for observation for several days.

She was set to attend the '90s Con event in Connecticut with her former All That co-stars this Saturday (March 25) but cancelled last-minute due to an undisclosed illness.

Bynes was put on conservatorship in 2013 – with her mother serving as her conservator – after reportedly setting fire to her neighbour's driveway.

Prior to that, she had engaged in a range of erratic behaviour – including hit-and-run and DUI incidents – before finally being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Her nine-year conservatorship ended last year after the court deemed she was fit to have full control over her medical, financial and personal decisions.
