Barbie, Hollywood’s upcoming big-screen toy story based on Mattel’s iconic doll, has rolled out a new trailer.

The latest peek of the Greta Gerwig-directed film – due out July 21 – offers a look at its colourful cast of characters led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the roles of Barbie and Ken.

The star-studded cast also includes Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Scott Evans, Rhea Pearlman, Alexandra Shipp, Will Ferrell, and Kingsley Ben-Adir. Academy Award winner Helen Mirren and Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Dua Lipa also appear.

The film tells the story of a doll from "Barbieland" setting out for adventure because she’s seen as imperfect in her native land.

Judging from the trailer and subsequent movie posters released Tuesday, many of the film’s stars appear to be playing alternate versions of Barbie and Ken.

"Meet our Barbies and Kens," read the Twitter caption of the posters, which include Robbie, Ben-Adir, Dua Lipa, Evans and others.

Gerwig, who scored Oscar nominations for the films Little Women and Lady Bird, directed the Barbie movie from a script she co-wrote with her creative and romantic partner Noah Baumbach — an Oscar nominee himself.

The couple previously teamed up on films such as Frances Ha, Mistress America and White Noise. – New York Daily News/Tribune News Service
