Pulau producer Fred Chong has confirmed that a sequel to the controversial horror movie is in the works, Harian Metro reported.
Speaking to the publication, Chong said he had already proceeded with plans to produce a sequel and that no negative comment will deter him from making Pulau 2.
"The controversies surrounding the first Pulau movie never broke my spirit to produce a sequel. You can expect to see a collaboration between us (Malaysia) and Indonesia soon," he said.
Chong added that the production team is still in the process of planning and shortlisting actors for Pulau 2, which will consider talents from Indonesia.
The sequel is expected to be released next year.
Pulau – which opened at cinemas nationwide on March 9 – became the target of fierce criticism following the release of its trailer on Jan 16 for allegedly depicting "explicit and suggestive" scenes.
In fact, the movie was banned from screening in Terengganu despite the Malaysian National Film Development Corporation (Finas) permitting a premiere nationwide.
Despite the controversies surrounding the film, Pulau performed well at the local and global box office.
In Malaysia, the horror flick exceeded expectations after raking in RM2mil at the box office. It also collected RM400,000 at the Vietnam box office four days after its release.
While the movie was a success, Chong reiterated that Pulau 2 will not be a continuation of its predecessor as he wanted to deliver something "fresh" for audiences.
"All I can say is that Pulau 2 will maintain its multiracial aspect," he added.
