The popular Hong Kong music show Jade Solid Gold will be airing its final episode this Sunday (May 21) after being on air for 42 years.
TVB confirmed the news of the show's cancellation and said that a special episode titled Jade Solid Gold's 43 Years Of Memories: Let The Music Soar will air on the same night.
Fans of Cantopop would remember this popular show as it featured some of the biggest names in the Hong Kong music scene. Stars such as Faye Wong, Sammi Cheng, the Four Heavenly Kings and more were prominently featured on the show.
Launched in October 1981, the shows has gone through many revamps to keep up with the times.
Although it started as a music show, Jade Solid Gold later billed itself as a variety show with featured celebrities performing their hit songs as well as play, often, silly games. The change of format was because of the rise of game shows in Hong Kong in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The change wasn't embraced by everyone though. Singer-actor Nicholas Tse, who has been a guest on the show several times, criticised the show as "boring", Sin Chew Daily reported.
For Jade Solid Gold's final episode, TVB has invited its original host Ken Choi back to reminisce about the show's legacy. Choi, 62, hosted the show from inception to 1985.
According to the Chinese entertainment portal, Choi was booted from the show after allegedly insulting the late Leslie Cheung after the latter won at the annual Jade Solid Gold Best Ten Music Awards in 1985.
"A moment of glory doesn't mean it will last forever," Choi told Cheung, insinuating the singer's fame will not last.
Jade Solid Gold also featured some celebrity hosts namely Andy Lau (1984), Sandy Lam (1986), Vivian Chow (1988-1991), Leo Ku (1993-1994) and Anita Yuen (1991).
