Wanting to fulfil his son’s wishes to study abroad, Hong Kong actor and deejay Sammy Leung has spent close to HK$3mil (RM1.76mil) to put his son through four years at Brighton College, England.
Speaking with Hong Kong online news portal Topick, Leung said that he was initially reluctant to send his son, Lancelot, overseas as he did not set aside money for it.
However, the 49-year-old actor eventually gave in to his son’s resolve.
At the interview, the Little Big Master star expressed shock after learning that a sizeable bulk of the costs went to his son’s private tutoring sessions.
“I was surprised that most of the expenses went to private tuition. I thought private tutoring was only popular in Hong Kong,” he said.
Thankfully, the money spent on the tutoring sessions paid off as Lancelot scored four A+ for his A-level examinations.
Apart from private tuitions, Leung also forked out cash to purchase equipment for his son’s rugby and football extra-curricular activities.
Other factors amounting to the expenses included accommodation and air tickets.
As for how he felt about the HK$3mil spent, the actor said it was worth it as his son’s grades, level of confidence and self-discipline as well as self-management skills have greatly improved after studying in Britain.
Leung also advised parents who plan to send their children overseas to set aside finances early.
Luckily for Leung, Lancelot is currently back in Hong Kong to study medicine at University of Hong Kong. But it is understood that, he hopes to return to Britain in the future to obtain his master’s degree.
Leung is also dad to 17-year-old daughter Charisse, who will be completing her school life in Hong Kong next year.
