Malaysian director Syamsul Yusof, 39, and Puteri Sarah Liyana, 37, have officially ended their nine-year marriage on Wednesday (June 14) at the Kuala Lumpur Lower Syariah Court.
According to mStar – The Star’s Malay language news portal – Syamsul divorced Puteri Sarah with a single talak in front of Syarie Judge Akmalludin Ilyas in a closed session at around 12.25pm.
The court allowed Puteri Sarah’s application for divorce under Section 47 of the Islamic Family Law (Federal Territories) Act 1984.
Akmalludin registered the divorce and ordered the actress to observe “iddah” (the period after divorce) for three months.
Puteri Sarah was represented by Syarie lawyer Datuk Akberdin Abdul Kader whereas Syamsul was represented by Syarie lawyer Azmi Mohd Rais.
On Jan 16, Puteri Sarah filed for divorce from Syamsul on the grounds that there was no more understanding and prolonged shiqaq (disagreement) between them.
The divorce was filed 10 days after Syamsul announced on Jan 6 that he had married another woman, Ira Kazar, in Thailand.
The couple were married on March 8, 2014. They have two children together – Syaikhul Islam, six, and Sumayyah, four.
