Hong Kong actress Grace Chan recently appeared in an online programme where she talked about her lowest moment in the entertainment industry.

During the interview, Chan admitted that although she loves presenting herself as someone who always had it easy in life, that is not the case in reality.

In fact, she once thought of quitting showbiz after being blasted with harsh comments for her first leading role in the 2015 drama, Raising The Bar.

“I had no experience or training then so when the drama aired, many criticised me to the point I felt like hiding in my room.

“I was just so afraid of seeing other people, and I felt ugly too,” the 31-year-old said.

Apart from being told that she couldn’t act and that she didn’t deserve to be the female lead, Chan claimed that some comments went as far as targeting her looks and family too.

“I was emotionally shattered. I thought that showbiz was all about entertaining people, but everyone was criticising me.

“It made me wonder if I should quit. I was very disappointed as I always set high standards for myself.

“Whenever someone on the streets asked if I was Grace Chan, I would assume they were mocking or criticising me. It was the darkest period in my life,” she said.

Looking back on the nine years which have passed, Chan described it to be “the greatest learning experience” which she is thankful for.

“(Being criticised) made me think that I should work on my acting and continue trying harder.

“These nine years have been the greatest learning experience,” she said, adding that she felt delighted after receiving compliments that her acting has improved in one of her later dramas.

When asked about how she copes with critical feedback today, Chan admitted that although she still worries about what others think of her, things are a lot better now.

“Sometimes, I want others to like me, but I also want to stay true to who I really am. It’s difficult to find a balance.

“Presently, I feel more assured. If I had only 20% confidence back then, then I have at least 60% confidence now,” she concluded.
