Taiwanese artiste Chang Chen Yue made a valiant attempt to resuscitate a man who drowned at Green Bay in Taiwan, but the latter died despite his efforts.
In a Facebook post on Monday (Aug 7), Chang, 49, recalled surfing at the beach at around 1pm when a woman’s piercing scream caught his attention.
“I turned around and saw someone lying on the ground with another person kneeling beside him. I could tell something was wrong and rushed back to shore.
“There was a man performing CPR on (the victim). Next to them was a woman in tears and a few visibly flustered children,” he wrote.
Chang then proceeded to help perform CPR on the unconscious victim. He added that despite trying his best to save the man, he was unable to detect the latter’s pulse.
The victim, surnamed Lee, was rushed to the hospital but ultimately died.
According to HK01, Lee – who was in his 50s – was pushing an inflatable boat for his godson and niece when a wave crashed into them and swept Lee 10m away from shore.
After learning the news, Chang made a separate post on Instagram to extend his condolences and express “regret” at failing to save the man.
“We were unable to save the man. Rest in peace. Watching someone’s life fade away in my hands is upsetting, and I feel regretful,” he wrote.
Many netizens have since left comments consoling the singer, saying that he had tried his best and thanked him for doing all he could.
Chang – a Taiwanese aborigine of the Amis people – is also known by his Amis name, Ayal Komod.
He made his debut in 1993 and is best known for the 1998 song Love Me, Don’t Go.
