Britney Spears’ estranged husband Sam Asghari is teaming up with PETA – not only to promote dog adoption but seemingly to throw shade at the pop star.
On Tuesday (Dec 19), the animal rights organisation shared promotional images of the 29-year-old fitness trainer cuddled up to a pooch, alongside some not-so-subtle text. The ads come just a few months after PETA slammed Spears for contributing to the “homeless-animal crisis” by buying, rather than adopting, a new dog.
“Some loves last,” reads one ad – an apparent nod to the former couple’s short-lived union. “Never buy dogs.”
“You can’t buy love, but you can adopt it,” reads the other.
Asghari filed for divorce from Spears in August after 14 months of marriage. A week later, the Toxic singer took to social media to show off a new puppy, which she apparently did not adopt.
“When influential people buy puppies, puppy mills cheer and animal shelters watch the homeless-animal crisis get even worse,” PETA said in a statement following Spears’ introduction. “With this one cutesy post, Britney Spears has sentenced countless deserving dogs in shelters to more days without love, a comfy bed to curl up on, or a chance at a real life.”
“She could have been a force for good and adopted, but instead she chose to be toxic, and animals will pay with their lives,” the organisation added.
Prior to parting ways, Asghari and Spears shared five dogs, including Porsha the Doberman, whom he gifted to Spears after popping the question in 2021. Asghari reportedly kept Porsha following their split, while the others remain under Spears’ ownership. – New York Daily News/Tribune News Service
