Hong Kong actor Gordon Lam’s latest Chinese New Year offering, Rob N Roll, is set to hit the big screen in Malaysia this Saturday (Feb 10).
The action comedy sees Lam playing a washed-up taxi driver grappling with financial challenges. Desperate to make ends meet, he reluctantly joins his best friend in a heist.
“My character is full of family problems. His daughter wants him to be a hero whereas his wife wants him to make more money to buy a house.
“However, he doesn’t meet any of the standards set. He’s helpless and would rather work in a car than at home,” the 56-year-old said in a statement.
Lam, who was recently in town alongside co-star Maggie Cheung Ho Yee to promote Rob N Roll, admitted to feeling a little scared of marriage after shooting the movie.
During the press conference in Kuala Lumpur, the actor said: “I believe that if men reach a certain age yet have poor financial capabilities, managing a business becomes challenging.
“Moreover, they must prioritise their family’s welfare too. That kind of pressure isn’t easy! I found myself asking, ‘Is this really the life (I want)? Think carefully!’”
Not all takeaways from Rob N Roll were bad for the former TVB star though.
Aside from having a good laugh at fellow actor Aaron Kwok’s fake buck teeth, which the latter sported for his role as a robber, Lam particularly liked the film’s portrayal of the hardship men endure so their family can lead a comfortable life.
“I hope that viewers will not just see Rob N Roll as a comedy movie, but as a film that carries meaningful messages,” he said.
Rob N Roll tells the story of a former wrestler turned robber whose millions of dollars, stolen in a heist, go missing when two best friends unintentionally thwart his plans.
To recover the missing fortune, the trio bands together to form a robbery team – all the while evading the relentless pursuit of law enforcement.
The film also stars Richie Jen, Lam Suet and Nancy Wu.
Rob N Roll premieres at cinemas nationwide on Feb 10.
